Introducing STEM Tennis

The STEM Sports® team is excited to announce that STEM Tennis will hit the market in the next week, and what better time than during the fourth and final USTA grand slam of the year, the U.S. Open. This curriculum features an array of STEM concepts central to the world of tennis. In particular, a deep dive into the mathematical sphere, as the game has no shortage of lines, angles, and scoring values and outcomes. We’ll take a closer look at how some of these lessons will stimulate the mind and the tennis pro in each of us. The below is a glimpse of the upcoming STEM Tennis curriculum through a mathematical lens.

Dimensions of the Court

Grades: 3-5
Concept: Math: Drawing & Classifying Lines and Angles 
Objective: Students will draw a scale model of a tennis court using a protractor. Students will identify important features of a court and use that information to determine lines of symmetry.
Standards: Common Core State Standards and National K-12 Physical Education Standards

Grades: 6-8 
Concept: Math: Coordinate Plane System and/or Pythagorean Theorem
Objective: Students will draw a scale model of a tennis court on a coordinate plane. Students will use a coordinate plane system to determine the distance a player has to travel to hit the ball back to their opponent.

I’d Love to Keep Score

Grades: 3-5
Concept: Math: Comparing Values and Expressions
Objective: Students will learn how to score the game of tennis through the popular theory of its correlation to an analog clock. Students will use this information to draw fraction diagrams that represent the score in a set, game, and match. Students will use these diagrams to compare different scores throughout a tennis match. 
Standards: Common Core State Standards and National K-12 Physical Education Standards

Grades: 6-8 
Concept: Math: Multiplication and Division of Fractions
Objective: Students will learn how to score the game of tennis through the popular theory of its correlation to an analog clock. Students will use this information to write expressions in fraction form that represent the score in a set, game, and match.
Standards: Common Core State Standards and National K-12 Physical Education Standards

One aspect all fans are drawn to – especially the younger ones – is spotting the radar to find out how fast they can serve. After completing this lesson, students are sure to want to be the next big serve and volley player on tour… 

Lets Serve

Grades: 3-5 
Concepts: Math: Decimal Notation for Fractions and Use of Technology
Objective: Students will learn the rules and strategies of serving in tennis. Students will use technology to find the speed of their serve. Students will analyze the speed and accuracy of their first serve to compare to their second serve.
Standards: Common Core State Standards and National K-12 Physical Education Standards

Grades: 6-8
Concepts: Math: Percentages and Use of Technology
Objective: Students will learn the rules and strategies of serving in tennis. Students will use technology to find the speed of their serve. Students will analyze the speed and accuracy of their first serve to compare to their second serve. 
Standards: Common Core State Standards and National K-12 Physical Education Standards

            In 2019, our team set out to create a handful of curricula that would support educators and engage and educate students. Yet over the last 3+ years, STEM Tennis will be the eleventh curriculum in circulation due to the kind words and positive feedback from teachers, administrators, and coaches. Our team’s mission and end goal is to not only provide quality pedagogy, but to inspire the next mathematician, engineer, and high school physics teacher and basketball coach.
