Building Leadership in Students Through STEM Learning

As children progress through their education, personal lives, and professional careers, it is imperative they have strong leadership skills. The ability to face failure, think critically about new, innovative solutions, and try again until there is a better outcome is a skill that benefits students in STEM learning and also in their future roles where others are looking to them for guidance.

Role models and mentors play a critical role in student success throughout their STEM education journey. By having someone to admire, ask for guidance, and receive feedback, students are more likely to continue to pursue STEM career paths and see success. These STEM mentors are also beneficial to students in gaining key leadership skills. By seeing their role model successfully lead a group, they will start to notice and adopt the skills they admire in their leader. As educators and school administrators, creating STEM mentorship programs, inviting guest speakers, or creating peer mentorship opportunities are great ways to provide students with role models who will help them strengthen their hard and soft skills.
